What is Low-E glass?
Energy conservation and efficiency are important issues to consider when upgrading your windows. Low emissivity or Low-E glass and window film is an easy way to conserve money while making your home or business more energy efficient. Low-E glass and window film can cost between 10% and 15% more than regular windows, but the amount of money and energy you save is tremendous. Choosing Low-E can eliminate 30% to 50% of energy loss. Preventing 30%-50% of energy loss can translate to big savings on your energy bill.
How does Low-E glass work?
The way Low-E glass and glazing works is by placing a thin layer of metal oxide over the window. This window film is virtually undetectable and can be placed on one or more panes of glass. Low emissivity (Low-E) glass reduces the rate of heat loss or U-factor. Heat transfer occurs from a warm pane of glass to a cooler pane. Coating a glass surface with a low-emissivity material and then turning that coating towards the space in between the glass layers eliminates a great deal of heat transfer, lowering the U-factor significantly. Different types of Low-E coatings have been designed to allow for high solar gain, moderate solar gain, or low solar gain.
What are argon gas filled insulated windows and how do they work?
Insulated glass units have an air space between the layers. Filling the space between the window panes with argon gas is a very simple way to reduce the transfer of heat within that space. In doing this, the space with argon gas reduces the heat transfer between the inside and outside of the window, and the overall transfer of heat between indoors and outdoors is reduced. Thus, the windows are more energy efficient, and the home or business maintains the correct temperature.
