Window Treatment Choices: Follow the Trends or Be Creative

Window GlassCurious about window treatment trends? Houzz contributor Shane Inman offers creative ideas for those who want to step outside the box with unique window décor. Many of his ideas are also ideal for budget-conscious decorators who want a one-of-a-kind look without that special bill.

“Curtain of beads” – To add glamorous sparkle and lots of personality, hang strings of beads in front of your window glass. Of course, this is only feasible in a room where privacy is not a concern. Bead curtains can be purchased, but you can also make your own by stringing beads on fishing line.

“Tree branch curtain rod” – Here’s an eye-catching décor accent that is free or cheap. Shane suggests finding a branch that is the appropriate length and thickness to replace a curtain rod. For a special touch, you can spray paint it in a shade that complements your room’s color scheme.

“Pennant valance” – If one of your children is a sports aficionado, you can wow them with this quick and easy window adornment: Create a valance from pennants of their favorite teams. You can put your sewing skills to work and actually make a valance from the pennants and then hang it on a curtain rod. However, you can also opt to save time and money by simply thumb-tacking them across the top of the window frame.

“Asymmetrical wood sculpture” – This very unique spin on the traditional valance involves finding a carved wood panel that can be mounted above your window. Shane suggests flea markets or “your travels” as possible sources for a piece like this. He also cautions that, while you want something that will make a statement, it is important to use a sculpture that harmonizes with the rest of the space.

“Wood awning” – Another spin on the wooden valance is to use boards to build an outdoor-style awning above the window. This is a versatile look, and you can give it shabby chic flair by painting it with a dry brush technique.

While ABC Glass and Mirror, Inc. cannot supply you with window treatments, we can help you ensure that the windows themselves are functional, attractive, and energy efficient. We offer replacement glass to repair windows marred by broken or fogged panes. A replacement unit can also help you solve privacy issues by switching from clear to frosted glass.

However, brand new vinyl windows are indicated in some situations. If, for instance, you are dealing with issues like drafts, inoperable windows, or unsightly frames, you should check out our line of high performance replacement windows. We offer energy-friendly features such as double and triple pane glass, argon or krypton gas, and Low-E films. Learn more by calling our Manassas Park office at 703-257-7150.
