Glass Options Overview for 2017

Make sure you know all your options as you add glass to your home in 2017. In the realms of style, safety, and ease of cleaning, a range of choices are offered to customers today. We’ll take a look at some of the most popular items and the possibilities they offer.

Annealed Versus Tempered Glass

What we think of as “standard” glass is technically known as annealed glass. This is used for certain applications such as protective glass tabletops that are added to an existing surface. Tempered glass is glass that has gone through a process of heating and rapid cooling during manufacturing. This glass is about four times stronger than annealed glass. It is utilized in many commercial and residential installations including:

• Glass shower enclosures
• Most window glass
• Glass tabletops that are affixed to legs or a pedestal
• Some glass shelving
• And much more

There are a few important facts to keep in mind regarding tempered glass. While it is highly durable overall, its corners and edges are more vulnerable that the rest of the piece. If a panel of tempered glass does get broken, it will react differently than fractured annealed glass. It will basically disintegrate into many pebble-like chunks.

Options in Glass Appearance

When you order glass for your home or business, it is available in an assortment of styles. Popular looks include:

• Clear
• Ultra-clear (reduced iron content)
• Frosted (etched with acid either in a pattern or over the whole surface)
• Patterned
• Tinted
• Cast (heavily textured glass formed in a mold)

Obviously glass appearance is relevant in terms of home fashion and aesthetic impact. However, the style of glass you choose can also have practical implications. For instance, before selecting one of the above options, consider whether the glass in question will need to create a level of privacy. This is especially pertinent if you are designing something like shower enclosure or toilet partition.

Glass that Is Easier to Clean

Today’s homeowner can even opt for glass that is easier to clean than non-treated glazing. ShowerGuard glass and glass coated with EnduroShield can make your life easier in multiple ways.

• Treated glass remains clean longer than normal glass.
• When you do wash treated glass, it will be easier to clean.

What are the differences between ShowerGuard glass and glass protected by EnduroShield? For starters, ShowerGuard glass is put through an ion-beam treatment during manufacturing which leaves it permanently sealed. With ShowerGuard glass there is no question of re-application since the coating is an integral part of the glass itself.

On the other hand, EnduroShield is a powerful sealant that bonds with the surface of the glass. Like ShowerGuard glass, glass treated with EnduroShield will resist staining, corrosion, and the like. EnduroShield can be applied to new glass or to glass already in use. It is unlikely that you will need to re-apply this product as it comes with a 10-year warranty when used on new glass and a 3-year warranty when added to glass already in use.
