Safety Glass

Safety and security are important concerns for homeowners and businesspersons alike, so ABC Glass and Mirror, Inc. offers four great safety glazing options –

  • Polycarbonate (commonly known as Lexan)

These four choices allow clients to select the glass that most appropriately addresses their safety and/or security needs. We make it easy to start the process by offering you a free on-site glass consultation and estimate. When might safety glass be indicated?

There are a variety of applications for the four types of safety glass listed above. Whenever glass is going to be installed in a high risk area, consider upgrading to safety glass. This includes patio doors, which see a lot of traffic and are often situated near outdoor activities, as well as many other situations. For instance, safety is an issue whenever overhead glass is installed, and safety glass is required for the security of display cabinets and show cases. It is also used for shower doors and as a window covering where vandalism or impact from airborne objects is of special concern.

Safety glass options

To meet individual needs, safety glass from ABC Glass and Mirror, Inc. is available single pane or double pane (insulated glass) in a variety of thicknesses ranging form 1/16" to 1"

In addition, we carry stock sheets of some types of safety glass for emergencies and immediate needs. When custom safety glass is desired, we will measure the area and order glass to the proper specifications.

Laminated glass

Offering an impressive level of safety, laminated glass is composed of two layers of glass with a layer of vinyl in between. The glass adheres to the vinyl even if it is fractured, so the glass will remain intact, although the glass is cracked. Shards and sharp sections of glass will not detach and pose a threat of injury. A skylight is an example of an application where laminated glass would be required.

Tempered glass

This glass offers increased safety and security in a couple of ways. First, it is much more durable than regular glass – about four to five times stronger, in fact. This means, of course, that it is less likely to break in the first place, but if it should, there is another safety feature in place. When tempered glass is broken, it breaks down into small, pebble-like pieces that are not sharp and pointed like normal glass shards. This greatly reduces the risk of cuts and can make clean-up quicker and easier.

Acrylic - also known as Plexiglass

Acrylic/Plexiglass sheeting which is not actual glass, is another useful type of safety glazing. It is even more durable than tempered glass and is also resistant to yellowing caused by exposure to sunlight. Furthermore, Plexiglass acrylic sheeting is available in a variety of colors. It offers an attractive look with high durability.

Polycarbonate - also known as Lexan

Polycarbonate/Lexan sheeting is our most durable safety glazing. It is basically indestructible and a great choice for applications where security is a major concern. It is highly flexible and resistant to even violent impact. It is, however, less resistant to becoming yellowed by the sun. Like plexiglass, it offers the appearance of glass with increased strength.
